Moving Checklist

Moving from a home in Colorado Springs?  My clients have told me this list is helpful before you move

BEFORE YOU LEAVE

Give Address Change to:
  • Post Office
  • Charge Account/Credit Card Companies
  • Doctors, dentists and professionals
  • Subscriptions: Notice requires several weeks
  • Friends and Relatives
  • Utility companies
  • Cable
  • Lawn service
  • Trash service
Bank
  • Transfer funds, arrange check-cashing in new city.
  • Arrange credit reference.
  • Close safe deposit box.
Insurance
  • Notify company of new location for coverages: Life, Health, Fire & Auto.
Utility Companies
  • Gas, electric, water, fuel-transfer (i.e. propane). Do not shut off these services! Instead, call the applicable companies and arrange for the services to be transferred to the new buyers on your closing date.
  • Obtain refunds on any deposits made
Medical, Dental, Prescription Histories
  • Ask Doctor & Dentist for referrals in new city/location
  • Transfer needed prescriptions, eyeglasses, X-rays
  • Obtain birth records, medical records, etc

 

And Don't Forget to:

  • Empty freezer
  • Defrost freezer and clean refrigerator.
  • Arrange for carpet cleaning just before closing.
  • Arrange to have items wrapped for moving.
  • Insurance coverage-transfer coverage from old property to new property at least one week prior to closing.
  • Plan for special car needs of infants.
ON MOVING DAY:
  • Carry enough cash or traveler's checks to cover cost of moving services and expenses until you make banking connections in the new city.
  • Carry jewelry and documents yourself, or use registered mail.
  • Pack one box of "essentials"
  • Plan for transporting pets; they are poor traveling companions if unhappy.
AT YOUR NEW ADDRESS:
  • Double-check closets, drawers & shelves to be sure they are empty.
  • Check on service of telephone, gas, electricity & water.
  • Check pilot light on stove, water heater and furnace.
  • Have new address recorded on driver's license.
  • Register car within 5 days after arrival in state or a penalty may have to be paid.
  • Register children in school.
  • Arrange for medical services: Doctor, Dentist, etc.
  • Crack open an appropriate beverage and enjoy your new home!
